Looking to step up the Comet again Mike Moody  is having CRE Performance install a built up 8.8 rear for his 64'  Mercury Comet. Here she sits on the lift with the stock rear out of the car.
Out with the old one wheel peel 8.0 inch.  This rear has 3.50 gears in it and a open differential.  Makes it hard to lay down two black tire tracks with the one wheel peeler differential.
The 8.8 rearend that is going in the 64' Comet came out of a 95' Mustang GT.  This rearend change will give  the Comet a gear reduction from the 3.50 to a 3.08 gear. The 3.08 gear will make driving on the highway lower in the RPMs and the posi trac lock differential will make them smoking burnouts leave a two line tattoo on the streets.
The 95' Mustang rearend is much wider then the original  rear coming out of the Comet. This 8.8 rear will need the axle tubes to be shortend.   The measured amount of tube is removed from each side using a chop saw. The jig is then inserted into the rear axle to make everything straight.  Then weld it back together.
After the axle was welded back together the rear axle was degreased , pressure washed and painted. The pinion gear was installed using new bearings ,crush sleve and seal. The posi differential was installed with new carrier bearings. Also new axle bearing and seals where installed before the new Moser axles where installed.
Time to install the 8.8 in the 64' Comet.  Center it up, set the pinion angle ,then weld the spring perches to the axle. After that it's  time to check the measurement for the new driveshaft. Tomorrow plum the rear brakes install the driveshaft and she is ready to go.
